Codec Central - Indeo Codec Indeo 3.2 General Information Overview Indeo 3.2 was developed by Intel in the 1980's, and was originally knows as 'RealTime Video 2.1' (RT21). Indeo is very similar to the Cinepak codec. It is is well-suited to CD-ROM, has fairly high compression times, and plays back on a wide variety of machines. Indeo 3.2 is a predeccesor to, and uses an entirely different compression algorithm. Architectures Supported.
Indeo® video 5 is the latest release of Intel's video compression and decompression software. It features greatly improved visual quality, better compression, and playback performance enhancements for MMX™ technology and the Pentium® II processor. Apple provides downloads for Intel's Indeo Video 3, 4, and 5 codecs for QuickTime in their Knowledge Base. However, these codecs only work under OS 9, and therefore, only on PowerPC Macs. There are no OS X versions and none of Windows Media Player, Real Player, VLC, or MPlayer seem to be able to play these files. Meet the AVI Video Codecs The video data in an AVI file can be formatted and compressed in a variety of ways. Video for Windows 1.1e comes with several compressors: Intel Indeo (version 3.2) Microsoft Video 1 Microsoft RLE (Run Length Encoding) Cinepak AVI is not restricted to these compressors.

Pros, Cons & Tips Pros. Takes about a third less time to compress video than Cinepak. Indeo is sometimes superior (in terms of quality and image compression) to Cinepak when compressing 'talking heads' type video, where most of the background image is static.
Cons. No longer supported in QuickTime for Windows 3. Has color artifacting that some producers find objectionable. A known bug prevents Indeo from properly handling content which is taller than it is wide. Tips. The recommended key frame interval for Indeo is 4, regardless of the frame rate.
Data rate and quality settings are mutually exclusive - if you select a fixed data rate, the quality slider is ignored. For playback on QTW, Intel strongly recommends attaching the Indeo video palette to the movie - it improves 8-bit video quality and playback performance (the Indeo palette is included with the codec release).
